Water Beads for Supervised Classroom Science: A Teacher's Guide

Lots of Australian teachers use water beads for hands-on classroom science. This guide covers how to run those activities with close adult supervision, and the safety steps that come first.

Safety first: read this before any activity

Not a toy. Keep away from children and pets. Swallowed beads can cause a blockage. If swallowed, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 (or 000 in an emergency). Water beads are for decorative and garden use only.

  • Adult supervised only, at all times. Never leave water beads with students, and never send them home.
  • Not for young children. Don't use water beads with babies, toddlers, or any child who might put things in their mouth, nose or ears.
  • Count beads in and out. Use a set number of beads in a tub with a lid. Count or check the tub before and after each session.
  • Keep it contained. Use a tray with raised edges and clean up spills straight away. Beads are slippery on floors.
  • Throw them out properly. Put used beads in the general waste bin. Never tip them down sinks, drains or toilets.
  • Check your school's policy and risk assessment process before you start.

Supervised activity ideas

  1. Absorption science demo: the teacher soaks beads in measured water and students record how they grow over time. It's a simple way to show how a polymer can soak up many times its own weight in water, and to practise measuring.
  2. Light and refraction: put clear water beads in a sealed clear jar of water and watch them almost disappear.
  3. Colour sorting in sealed bags: seal soaked beads in heavy-duty zip bags and tape the seals. Students sort or count the colours through the bag.
  4. Plant growth investigation: compare cuttings in water beads with cuttings in plain water. See water beads for plants and our plant care guide.

How much to order

For one class, a few 50g or 100g packs go a long way. Schools running activities across several classes often choose our 1kg bulk packs. Shop all water beads.

After the activity

Check the area and floor for stray beads, count the tub, and wash hands. Store unused dry beads sealed and out of reach.
